‘Did you bring your body with you?’ In my classes, this usually gets chuckles because of course you can’t fail to bring your body with you.
People often ask me,’What’s the secret to a more conscious relationship with your body?’
It is this simple: Get to know your body. Who is she … or he?
Start by giving your body a name.
A name goes a long way to shaping our identities, don’t you think? Once you have a name, you can fill in the rest of the picture. You imagine a face and a personality, too. The story of you is in your name. Names reflect intentions such as 'Hope' or 'Angel.' Family names that are handed down honor your origins.
To discover your body’s name, move – stretch, walk, leap, just dance around the room. Shake out your wrists, touch your toes, do jumping jacks, skip rope. Do something, anything, to get moving.
As you do, ask your body to reveal her or his name. Think about what your body likes to do. What is your body good at doing? Think about what your body is passionate about. When you learn something, how does your body learn and remember it? Did a name pop in? Good.
My body’s name is Rhythm, which is perfect for her, because she really likes to move. Because she has a name, I can have a more conscious conversation with her.
Our conversation might be, ’How are you feeling today, Rhythm’ or it might be, ’I understand you’d like to go for a walk now. How about it’
I encourage you to have the same’ getting-to-know you’ conversations with your body. Ask him (or her) what he (or she) needs, wants and desires.
Remember, your body is a magnificent partner for life.
This is one of the first steps to understanding how your body can help you make better choices in all areas of your life using the methodology that I have created that I have named: Body Knowledge System ™
