| Yoga! It Can be for You too! |
| By Lynn Kindler |
| I'll never forget how I felt as I waited for my first Yoga class to begin. I had a hard time finding a position that was comfortable sitting upon my folded blanket perched on top a Tami mat on the floor. I also wasn't sure where I was supposed to be looking as people flowed in and took their places on the floor next to me. I felt like the room was full of ballerinas and I was grossly out of place. I learned many lessons later that as I relaxed into following my breath, the discomfort of my body left and my thoughts disengaged from my comfortable rut of negative thinking. This enabled my body to flow into poses that I would have never believed possible for me to create with my limbs.
I've learned that even when I don't feel like going to yoga, halfway through the class I'm always glad that I made the choice to be there (besides, I always have a great nights' sleep afterwards!).
I attend classes that have combined styles of Yoga from Hatha through Iyengar. This combination keeps me interested (I suspect I would have probably rebelled and left if I had walked into a class that was strictly one method that students had to adhere to!). But that's just me, so consider what is best for you and honor yourself. These classes also combine beginner, intermediate and advanced yoga practitioners. The benefits of a multi-level class include when you're new, being able to see where it is possible for you to''grow''and then, when you're further along, be reminded how to safely move into a pose, and let your breath guide you to where your body wants you to stretch next. Yoga is not about competition-- it's about the union of body, mind and soul. So put on some comfy clothes and follow your breath to yoga --your body (and soul) are waiting!
