Is there Room for What you Want?
By Jamie McGarvey, MS,LCPC Life Coach
''Body fat and clutter are both forms of self-protection...giving the illusion of being able to control things and prevent them from affecting you too deeply. But it is an illusion'' ~ Karen Kingston ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~

If you have been stuck in reaching your weight loss goal perhaps it is time to look at your environment and see what you can start letting go of to clear the way to reach your goal. The clutter in your life might be keeping your from embracing what you want and desire in your life.

Having clutter blocks your energy and prevents you from getting what you want out of life. In short, it creates a struggle. Everything that you collect takes energy from you so if your life, home is full of clutter then you don't have that energy to use to make a change in your life. Clutter might protect you from change...from seeing what needs to happen or keep you from taking a risk that might move you forward.

What is clutter?

Things that are unfinished, too much stuff, unused or unloved items or too much stuff in too small of a space. If it is disorganized, crowded or incomplete it is clutter and it is time to start taking care of it.

Some of the problems associated with clutter:

Weight

Confusion

Stuck in the past

Shame

Procrastination

Disharmony

Tired

Health problems

Dulled sense of joy

Financial

Distract you from what is really important

Difficulty focusing

If you recognize yourself here then it is time to take action and begin to let go of your clutter...and what is getting in the way of your success. Last week a client of mine decided to tackle the clutter in her life and through the support of friends and hiring a professional organizer she is step by step improving her life and moving towards her health and fitness goals.

She started...she took action and that is what YOU can do too. Take the challenge below and tell me how you are doing.

Living Well means removing the obstacles to your success and clutter definitely gets in the way. Start by letting go of your clutter...putting your home on a diet and see how your energy changes and opportunities that come your way. It is a simple and effective strategy to change your life. Let me know how this works for you.

Challenge

Begin by breaking down the job. This will make it less overwhelming. Start in one room, one drawer or closet. Get rid of what you don't love, isn't useful or doesn't give you energy. You can give it away, throw it away or sell it...the trick is to do it immediately rather than create another pile of clutter. You can set a 6 month rule like my client, Anjali if she doesn't wear it or use it that time frame she gives it away. If it is something that is undone either ''do it'' or ''delegate it''.

Get help. Hire a professional organizer, trade clutter removal with a good friend, tap into the resources around you to reduce the feeling of overwhelm and create action right away.

Contact 1-2 people who can assist you and schedule a time for them to come over.

Be present and Celebrate. Notice what happens as you let go of your clutter...finish undone projects.

Celebrate your success and enjoy the process. Light candles, play music and make the process fun!

Maintenance. Once the clutter is gone then get a structure in place to prevent the build up again. Maintain the clutter free space so that you have room for what you really want. You may have to schedule an hour a week or 20 minutes a day for maintenance and it is worth it.
