Energy Drainers
By Laura Erdman-Luntz MA,CLC
Energy( and lack thereof...)

seems to be in the forefront of most of our lives. I don't think I have ever had a client who hasn't mentioned the word ''energy'' at some point during our first meeting.

So many of us are working with such energy debt that we have no energy left for ourselves!

Many of our clients are at this point when they come to work with me. Their lives are so hectic and crazy that by the end of the day, just getting the kids to bed or controlling the remote is the most they can muster

much less doing something for themselves.

If you want to begin to make changes in your life to begin living healthier, increasing your energy levels is a great place to start.

From my study of healthy lifestyles and yoga, I have come to understand a few things about energy:

1. You have a finite amount of energy available to you (Remember the last time you ran out of energy?...)

2. You can increase the energy available to you by taking care of yourself. Eating well, exercise, relaxation, regular bodywork, time spent with your best friend, getting enough rest, etc., all feed your energy levels. Pay attention to what leaves you feeling better the ''ahhs'' in your life and work into adding more of whatever that is into your life.

3.A portion of this finite amount of energy is lost when we don't take care of ourselves. (In other words, we lose out on an opportunity to GAIN energy AND we lose some of the prescious energy that we have left).

4.All of the little ''energy drainers'' in your life add up to be an enormous drain. Examples of little energy drainers are your messy closet, messy desk, the car that needs its' maintenance check up, your unbalanced check book, etc.

A ''little'' energy drainer is anything that make you think

''UGH...'' whenever you see it or think about it.

5. Big energy drainers are huge drains on your energy. Big energy drainers are entire areas in your life that aren't even in the ball park of what you want them to be. Examples include

a job that isn't the career choice of your dreams,

a marriage that is a struggle, a friendship that you have outgrown, not wanting to live in the geographical area you have chosen, etc.

These drainers are ones that will take some work to clean up, but it is possible!!

6. Finally, the energy drainers I like to call the ''should, woulda, coulda's.''

I think we all know what I am talking about! Life is way too short for these, so let them go!!Move on to fill your life with the ''I wantas!''

When deciding where to begin to increase your energy levels, I recommend looking at your energy drains first before energy boosters. Think of your energy level as fluid in a cup and drains as cracks in the cup where your energy ''escapes.'' No matter how much energy boosting you do, the energy will just continue to drain until you fix the cracks.

Choose a few of the really easy drains in your life, cleaning them up as soon as you can.

The more you clean up ( even a little one), the more energy you will feel.

Once you start to feel energetic, the bigger energy drains won't seem so daunting to tackle and your energy boosting activities will be more beneficial.
